Tips and tricks on how to use library resources and services

Finding & accessing e-books

Exeter Health Library has access to over 100+ e-books, which are available to you 24/7.

All you’ll need is an NHS OpenAthens username and password, which is quick and easy to register for. All our e-books are available to both Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, and Devon Partnership Trust staff.

Our e-books can either be read online, and have search and browse functionality, or some can be downloaded to your PC for a limited time period, for offline use. Full instructions on how to download ProQuest e-books to your own device can be found here. You don’t need a Kindle or e-reader, books can be downloaded to PCs, laptops, tablets and even phones!

There are a number of ways you can find out what e-books we have access to:

  • Via the Library Catalogue
    All of our e-books are catalogued on the Library Catalogue. If we have online access to a title, there will be a link on the page which says ‘Available online to NHS staff and eligible College of Medicine and Health users only’. Click on the link and log in with your NHS OpenAthens login when prompted.


    Please note: we share a library system with the University of Exeter, but we do not have access to their e-book collections. Their links will ask for an Exeter IT login, which you won’t have.

  • Via our Topic Guides
    If you visit the Topic Guide for your clinical area/discipline, you will find links to relevant e-books in the ‘Books’ section of each guide – click on the E-books tab for a list of books, and then follow the links through to the e-book, logging in with NHS OpenAthens if prompted.
     
  • Via our E-books page
    Visit our E-Books page on the website, to browse a list of available titles by collection, which include the ‘Rapid’ and ‘Hands On’ series, the ‘Nursing made incredibly easy’ collection and a wide range of titles on a variety of subjects from our ProQuest EBL Library.

If you’d like access to a particular book, please complete our online Book/chapter request form. We’ll do our best to provide you with access to what you need, although our resources are limited.

Use Chrome or Edge but not Internet Explorer

When using any links from our website pages (https://exeterhealthlibrary.net) or logging on to NHS Open Athens (https://openathens.nice.org.uk) to access journals please ensure that Chrome or Edge is selected as your browser of choice.
